Academic References & Sources

The Giovanni Salzano the Traveling Mercenary collection of books utilizes trusted academic source material from studied and vetted academic & history professionals and experts in the study of Late Medieval / Early Renaissance Europe. Founded on the bedrock of 10 source material books from authors such as James D. Tracy (Holland Under Habsburg Rule, 1506-1566; 1990), James C. Kennedy (A Concise History of the Netherlands; 2017), Jane de Longh (Margaret of Austria: Regent of the Netherlands; 1953), Geoffrey Parker (Emperor: A New Life of Charles V; 2019), and Leonie Frieda (Francis I: The Maker of Modern France; 2018), The Traveling Mercenary books incorporates historical accuracy with an intriguing, fantastical storyline that would fit into any non-fiction book equally well.

Historical events are not altered in any horrendously way, rather we find our heroes & villains participating in historical events and interacting with historical people. Both categories are treated as historically accurate as possible with the above-mentioned source material. In limited circumstances, fact may be embellished; in such cases, a clear footnote on that page in the book is added to detail the addition. Where there is gray area historically---a lack of facts, conflicting accounts, and other ambiguous information---we find our characters in the story the most active. As with embellished facts, footnotes and references are on each page to provide details to those historically gray areas, while also providing reasonable justification for historical characters' choices in our story in light of an ambiguous situation factually.

Research & care has been given to dates, local languages, weather patterns of local regions, and even appropriate animal populations for regional affairs. Everything is footnoted and referenced for accuracy.

Book Quote

“Death comes for us all, Lafontaine. You. Me. The peasant. The king. The slave. It spares no one and strikes with utter consistency. But what lives beyond our death is what we lived for.”
(Duke Karl von Egmond, AD 1515)
---Chapter 10; No Tears (Northern Company)---
