I found myself disappointed when the Story ended. That is as it should be, the Reader should want for more. I am greatly looking forward to the further adventures of Salzano and Company.

With different storylines and characters at play, the author manages to organize and connect these storylines, each contributing significantly to the main plot. The book was divided into three sections that focused on different parts of their journey as mercenaries. The author provided references to other series of the book and also narrated some terms and the origins of some items. This made the book easier to read. Even though this is the third book in the Mercenary series, there was no confusion.

The one thing I like about this book is the author's descriptive prowess; the fighting scenes were so real that I felt like I was featured in the events that happened in this book. Also, the editing and character development in this book were professionally done.

If you are familiar with Eric Flint's time-travel saga, the "Ring of Fire" series, I can assure you that Jason Albano has done his homework every bit as well as Mister Flint did his. Only, although Jason and I share a fondness for science fiction, he ISN'T writing sci-fi here. He is demonstrating that the events which really happened are compelling enough to generate a page-turning adventure series. Historical figures share the stage with made-up characters, while footnotes help to provide clarity about what's going on.

There is nothing I found dislikeable about this book; I found every chapter worthwhile reading. It wasn't only interesting to read, but it was educational as it granted me a bit of historical knowledge of the ancient Netherlands in the 1500s. I got to learn about coffee's first introduction to Europe and how it happened.

BOOK QUOTE
“There is no honorable way to fight. When you are fighting for your life, it does not matter how you fight, as long as you survive. Fight dirty, it will not matter how you ended it to the dead man."
