Giovanni Salzano, Benjamin Bakker, and Jerry Lancaster find themselves separated from the rest of Northern Company in Dordrecht. Worse still, Salzano has yet to conquer death from his wounds sustained at Tilburg Manor, while Lancaster is forced to make a deal with the devil to avoid death after he is captured by the Habsburg authorities and tortured for the whereabouts of Margaret's spymaster, Jean de Marnix.
Ironically, Lancaster finds himself in the employ of Margaret of Austria, which ends with the group of mercenaries fractured.
